Medical ethics presentation on
death April 24 at St. Mary's Hospital


Noted ethicist Linda H. Newton will give a special presentation on the philosophical issues surrounding death at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, April 24, in St. Mary's Hospital Conference Room 1 in Rhinelander.

Newton is a professor of philosophy at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn., and an Associate in Medicine at Yale Medical School .

The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will talk about:

- the varying definitions of death;

- conflicting values in end of life issues;

- the implications of autonomy in decisions at the end of life;

- and the implications of economics and rationing for these same decisions.

The presentation is being sponsored by Ministry Health Care and Nicolet College .

A day earlier, Wednesday, April 23, Newton will give an Earth Day presentation at Nicolet College entitled Integrity, Stability and Beauty: A Sustainable Environmental Ethic. That event, which also free and open to the public, will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Nicolet College Theatre on the Rhinelander campus.

Newton is the director of the Program in Applied Ethics and director of the Environmental Studies Program at Fairfield University . She has authored or co-authored several books and more than 80 articles in the field of ethics and environmental studies.
